Created by the General Telecommunications Law (Law nº 9,472 of July 16, 1997), Anatel was the first Brazilian regulatory agency, at November 5,1997.
According to Law 9,472/1997, Anatel is an entity integrating the indirect Federal Public Administration, subject to special government agency rules and connected to the Ministry of Communications. It is administratively independent and financially autonomous. Headquartered in Brasilia, Anatel conducts enforcement activities and maintains close contact with society through Regional Offices and Operating Units in all Brazilian capitals.
The Agency works focused on its mission of promoting the development of telecommunications in the country to give it a modern and efficient telecommunication infrastructure, capable of providing adequate, diverse and at fair prices services to society, throughout the national territory.
